About the role

We are looking for professional, customer focused, forward-thinking people who enjoy working as part of a busy, friendly team to join our Council Tax team as a Revenues Officer within the Revenues and Benefits Service. We are appointing to multiple full-time posts, but consideration can be given regarding hours for the right candidate. As a great team player, you will be adaptable in your approach to work and open to meeting the various challenges that the billing and collection of Council Tax presents.

If you have experience in working with the public and can demonstrate a confident and diplomatic approach supported by good interpersonal skills, if you are motivated by improving the customer experience and aspire to deliver a first-class service then we would like to hear from you.

You will be an active member of the team, keen to learn and adaptable to change. You must be an enthusiastic, self-motivated team player who can demonstrate the ability to learn quickly and give excellent customer service. Working within a team of dedicated people you must show the ability to make decisions under pressure and deal with changing priorities.

What you can expect to be doing

At Dorset Council, we’re passionate about giving our communities the best possible support, especially when times are tough. As part of our friendly Council Tax team, you’ll play a vital role in making sure bills are managed accurately and fairly, always balancing the rules with a human touch. You’ll help people navigate what can be a stressful process, offering reassurance, clear explanations and practical solutions.

Your days will be varied, whether you’re talking to customers on the phone, welcoming them face-to-face, or writing back to queries, you’ll bring plenty of patience, tact and understanding. From setting up new Council Tax accounts and applying discounts, to arranging payment plans and guiding customers towards self-service options, you’ll help make sure everything runs smoothly. You’ll also be there to spot when someone might need extra support, signposting to further help or safeguarding where needed.

You’ll use our MRI Revenues & Benefits system alongside document management software to keep everything up to date and accurate. But you won’t be on your own. You’ll work in a collaborative team that’s big on sharing knowledge and looking out for each other. We’ll give you all the training you need, support your professional development, including options for qualifications through the IRRV, and once you’re fully settled in, we can explore hybrid working to give you more flexibility.

With a main base at County Hall in Dorchester and an office at Westport House, you’ll be part of a service that truly values what you bring. If you’re looking for a role where your people skills, resilience and teamwork make a real difference every day, we’d love to hear from you.

About you

  •  personal resilience and excellent team working skills
  •  ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing priorities and tight deadlines
  • effective communication skills with tact and diplomacy
  • strong customer service focus
  • ideally, confident using Microsoft Office products
  • experience with MRI Revenues & Benefits systems and document management systems is desirable (training provided)
