About the role

Overall Purpose
The key purpose of the role is to teach and supervise whole classes during short-term absence of teachers. When not required to cover lessons, the role will include other duties, for example as part of the lunchtime team or as a classroom Teaching Assistant.

Duties and Responsibilities
▪ Supervise and teach a class of pupils during short-term absence of their usual teacher, ensuring their safety and continued access to learning following set plans of work.
▪ Register attendance in accordance with school policy.
▪ Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.
▪ Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
▪ Promote and reinforce the self-esteem of pupils.
▪ Supervise pupils engaged in learning activities that have been pre-prepared in accordance with school policy.
▪ Ensure the appropriate organisation of the classroom and equipment during sessions.
▪ Keep pupils on task and respond to general queries.
▪ Maintain a positive and calm learning environment.
▪ Undertake pupil record-keeping as agreed with the class teacher.
▪ Collect pupils’ work at the end of a session and return it to the class teacher.
▪ Provide objective and accurate feedback to the teacher concerning the session.
▪ Manage pupil behaviour in class, reporting difficulties as appropriate.
▪ Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures of the school and in particular relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
▪ Support the school’s fire and emergency procedures by being familiar with the instructions for staff and children, located in all of the teaching areas, and take appropriate action should the need arise.

▪ Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.
▪ Attend relevant meetings as required.
▪ Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
▪ Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including at playtimes and lunchtimes.
▪ Where necessary attend to a pupil with soiled clothing.
▪ If qualified carry out first aid.
▪ Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required.

Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant and Cover Supervisor role, each individual task will not be identified. It is expected that all colleagues will endeavour to deliver any tasks identified as reasonable by their Headteacher.

About Us

Heathlands Primary Academy & Pre-School is a one-form entry primary academy located in West Howe, Bournemouth. We have 210 pupils from pre-school, age 3 through to Year 6, age 11. The school is part of the Coastal Learning Partnership Multi Academy Trust; a vibrant, collaborative Trust of schools working together around shared goals, values and aspirations. We are looking to recruit a cover supervisor for PPA and short-term cover across our classes Nursery to Year 6.

The role is to work under the direct instruction senior staff; you will be required to supervise children in whole classes during the short-term absence of teachers. You will have dedicated PPA time to prepare and a full induction programme.

Our ideal candidate will have experience supporting children within a primary aged school setting; with the ability to motivate and encourage children as well as being enthusiastic, responsible and enjoys working with children. They should have good inter-personal skills and has a desire to support children to progress with their learning, promote high standards of behaviour and believe that all children can succeed.
