About the role

The Thomas Hardye School Sixth Form is seeking to appoint an inspiring, motivational and compassionate Learning Mentor to support our Sixth Form team within a busy secondary school environment. The successful applicant will work directly with students who are demotivated or disengaged, as well as those struggling to fully participate in learning for a range of other reasons. You will support 16-19 year olds to overcome a range of barriers to learning, and motivate them to achieve their full potential.

The postholder will provide high-quality pastoral support to our students and their families, working closely with the Sixth Form leadership and year teams. The role includes networking with other pastoral support staff, teachers and external professionals such as educational psychologists and social workers.

The successful candidate will also be a key member of the safeguarding team, acting as one of several Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads in school. For training will be provided, and more senior staff with Safeguarding responsibility will provide support and guidance.

We require someone with:

  • experience supporting students in school in a pastoral or educational capacity.
  • a good understanding of principles of development and learning processes and in particular, barriers to learning.
  • developing knowledge of local authority services and national organisations which can provide support for students.
  • a dedication to, and thorough understanding of the processes involved in safeguarding children and young people.
  • A commitment to inclusion and diversity.
  • a relevant qualification at minimum Level 3, or equivalent sector experience and the willingness to undertake training and gain qualification.
Full time/Term time 39 weeks plus inset days.
Grade 9. £28,199 with possible increments to £31,983 annual salary, pay award pending.

The pro rata salary shown is based on the number of hours and weeks worked and includes appropriate paid annual leave and bank holiday entitlements.

This role is UK based and your Right to Work will need to be established as part of the appointment process.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. The amendments to the ROA 1974 (Exceptions Order 1975, (2013 and 2020)) provide that when applying for certain jobs and activities, certain spent convictions and cautions are ‘protected’, so they do not need to be disclosed to employers, and if they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account. The MOJ’s guidance on the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Exceptions Order 1975, provides information about which convictions must be declared during job applications and related exceptions and further information about filtering offences can be found in the DBS filtering guide.

Keeping Children Safe in Education

The Thomas Hardye School will conduct online searches of shortlisted candidates. This check will be part of a safeguarding check, and the search will purely be based on whether an individual is suitable to work with children. All aspects of social media and internet searches will be conducted. As care must be taken to avoid unconscious bias and any risk of discrimination, a person who will not on the appointment panel will conduct the searches and will only share information if and when findings are relevant and of concern.
