About the role

Cover Supervisor

35 hours per week, £20,698 - £21,706 pro rated per annum (pay award pending).

We are seeking a reliable, enthusiastic, and confident Cover Supervisor to join our dedicated team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and is passionate about supporting their learning, development, and wellbeing.

As a Cover Supervisor, you will supervise classes during the short-term absence of teaching staff, ensuring that students remain engaged with the work set and maintain high standards of behaviour, attendance, and conduct. You will play a key role in creating a positive learning environment, supporting students to achieve their potential and helping to maintain continuity in their education.

The successful candidate will be an effective communicator with the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff. They will be adaptable, resilient, and committed to promoting high expectations and a culture of success throughout the school.

This role would suit individuals considering a future career in teaching, education, or youth work, as well as those with experience of working with children and young people.

We offer a welcoming and supportive school community, excellent opportunities for professional development, and the chance to make a meaningful difference to the lives of our students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise whole classes during the short-term absence of teaching staff, ensuring students remain on task and engaged in their learning.
  • Manage classroom behaviour in line with the school's policies and procedures.
  • Establish positive and productive relationships with students, acting as a role model and promoting high expectations.
  • Support students' learning by providing guidance and encouragement while fostering independence and resilience.
  • Provide feedback to teaching staff regarding student participation, progress, and behaviour.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Support the wider life of the school, including break and lunchtime duties, educational visits, and extracurricular activities as required.

The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate:

  • A passion for supporting young people to achieve their best.
  • The ability to engage, motivate, and inspire students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence in managing groups of students and maintaining positive behaviour.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and student wellbeing.
  • A willingness to participate in training and professional development.

Experience of working with children and young people is desirable, although full training will be provided for the right candidate.

Working weeks per year: 38

You will be expected to promote the ethos and values of the school, participate in training and development opportunities, contribute positively to the school community, and attend meetings and events as required.

Keeping Children Safe in Education

West Moors Middle School will conduct online searches of shortlisted candidates. This check will be part of a safeguarding check, and the search will purely be based on whether an individual is suitable to work with children. All aspects of social media and internet searches will be conducted. As care must be taken to avoid unconscious bias and any risk of discrimination, a person who will not on the appointment panel will conduct the searches and will only share information if and when findings are relevant and of concern.
