About the role

Help shape places that support communities and generate value.

We’re looking for a skilled and motivated Repairs & Maintenance Surveyor to help us maintain safe, compliant and high-quality buildings across Dorset’s Commercial & Community property portfolio.

About the role

As a Commercial & Community Assets R&M Surveyor, you’ll take ownership of a diverse portfolio of assets—including leased properties, community buildings and income-generating spaces—ensuring they are well maintained, compliant, and deliver value for our residents and the council.

Working within our Facilities Management service, you’ll provide professional surveying expertise to manage repairs and maintenance activity, while supporting long-term asset performance in line with Dorset Council’s Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) 2024–2030.

This is a varied and commercially aware role covering:

  • Day-to-day repairs and planned maintenance
  • Contractor and performance management
  • Lease and landlord compliance responsibilities
  • Tenant and stakeholder engagement

What you’ll deliver

You’ll play a key role in ensuring our Commercial & Community assets are safe, sustainable and fit for purpose by:

  • Managing your portfolio – overseeing condition, compliance and repairs, ensuring assets meet statutory and lease obligations
  • Leading maintenance works – commissioning and managing contractors and consultants to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Supporting asset performance – maintaining accurate data, contributing to budget planning, and helping optimise maintenance spend
  • Engaging with tenants and stakeholders – building strong relationships to support effective, customer-focused service delivery
  • Ensuring compliance and governance – supporting safe, legally compliant buildings across a varied estate
  • Providing resilience – participating in the out-of-hours emergency rota as required

You’ll act as a custodian of value, helping ensure assets are maintained in a way that supports both community outcomes and financial sustainability.

About you

You’ll bring a strong grounding in building surveying and property maintenance, along with:

  • Experience in repairs & maintenance, building surveying or property management, ideally across commercial or mixed-use assets
  • Good technical knowledge of building construction, compliance, landlord responsibilities and contracts
  • Confidence in managing contractors, stakeholders and competing priorities
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills, particularly with tenants and partners
  • The ability to balance customer needs, risk, and value for money

You’ll be joining a forward-looking Assets & Property service that is transforming how its estate is managed.

Your work will:

  • Support a sustainable and income-generating property portfolio
  • Enable community use and local benefit
  • Help deliver a leaner, more efficient estate aligned to strategic priorities
This is an opportunity to have a direct impact on both places and people across Dorset.
