About the role

Are you passionate about protecting Dorset's communities, countryside and coastline? Do you thrive in a role where no two days are the same?

Dorset Council is seeking a proactive and motivated Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) Rural Patrol Officer to help tackle anti-social behaviour, protect our rural and coastal environments and provide a reassuring presence across Dorset.

Working as part of the Community Safety Team and in close partnership with Dorset Police, you will patrol rural communities, protected landscapes, beaches and other identified hotspot locations. You will use delegated CSAS powers to address anti-social behaviour, support enforcement activity and engage positively with residents, visitors and partner agencies.

A key focus of the role will be the monitoring and enforcement of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), including patrols of protected beach areas across West Dorset and Purbeck. You will also support the prevention of rural crime, environmental offending and anti-social behaviour affecting Dorset's countryside and coastal areas.

The role will play an important part in identifying and reporting risks associated with deliberate fire setting and wildfire threats, gathering intelligence and working with partners to reduce risks to the public, wildlife habitats and protected landscapes. You will contribute to the monitoring and reporting requirements agreed with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, including recording incidents attended, rural crime reports, PSPO interventions, enforcement outcomes and community engagement activity.

What's in it for You?
  • A unique opportunity to help shape and develop Dorset's expanding Rural Community Safety Accreditation Scheme.
  • The chance to make a visible difference in some of Dorset's most beautiful rural and coastal locations.
  • Work closely with Dorset Police, CCTV operators, housing teams, environmental services and other partner agencies.
  • Full training, support, uniform and equipment provided.
  • Opportunities to develop enforcement, investigation, conflict management and partnership-working skills.
  • Access to police systems and intelligence processes relevant to the role.
  • A varied and rewarding position where every day brings different challenges and opportunities.
  • The ability to help protect vulnerable people, tackle anti-social behaviour and safeguard Dorset's natural environment.

What You Can Expect to Be Doing
  • Conducting high-visibility foot and mobile patrols across rural and coastal areas of Dorset.
  • Monitoring and enforcing Public Space Protection Orders, including protected beaches.
  • Working closely with Dorset Police to prevent and address anti-social behaviour and rural crime.
  • Engaging with local communities, visitors, businesses and landowners to provide reassurance and support.
  • Identifying and reporting incidents relating to wildlife crime, criminal damage, fly-tipping, heritage crime and environmental offences.
  • Monitoring areas vulnerable to deliberate fire setting and providing intelligence to support preventative action.
  • Issuing warnings and appropriate enforcement where offences occur.
  • Gathering intelligence and submitting reports to support Dorset Council and Dorset Police.
  • Supporting vulnerable individuals and signposting people to appropriate services where required.
  • Maintaining effective communication with Dorset Police, CCTV operators and partner organisations.
  • Working a shift pattern that includes evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

About You
We are looking for someone who is confident, professional and capable of working independently across a large geographical area.

You will have:
  • A full UK manual driving licence (essential).
  • The ability to communicate effectively with people from all backgrounds.
  • Experience of dealing calmly and professionally with challenging or confrontational situations.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently using your own initiative.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Competent IT skills, including experience of Microsoft Office applications.
  • A passion for community safety, environmental protection and public service.
  • An ability to build positive relationships with partner agencies and local communities.
  • The flexibility to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays as required.

Due to the nature of the role, the successful applicant will be required to pass Non-Police Personnel Vetting (NPPV) and maintain clearance throughout their employment. The post also involves significant travel across Dorset.
