About the role

Dorset Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Highway Design Engineer to join our Highway Improvements Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the delivery of safe, sustainable transport infrastructure across Dorset.

 Our team designs and manages a diverse programme of schemes, including:

  • segregated cycleways and active travel infrastructure
  • junction and signalised crossing improvements
  • public realm enhancements
  • infrastructure supporting residential and commercial development
  • creating safer routes to schools
  • road Safety Improvements

Key Responsibilities

 Based in Dorchester, close to the beautiful coast and countryside, this role provides an exciting opportunity to design and deliver highway improvements schemes for the communities of Dorset: 

  • lead and support the design and delivery of highway improvement schemes from concept through to post-completion review
  • manage projects funded through the Local Transport Plan (LTP) and external sources
  • collaborate with internal teams, external partners, stakeholders, and clients to ensure high-quality outcomes
  • supervise construction activities and support junior team members
  • apply civil and highway engineering expertise to deliver projects on time and within budget
About You
 We are looking for candidates who are:
  • educated to at least HND/HNC level in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • experienced in highway design and construction standards, procedures, and health & safety regulations
  • experienced using AutoCAD. Experience with Civils 3D and other highway design packages would be advantageous.
  • knowledgeable in current highway design standards and CDM Regulations
  • strong communicators with excellent report writing skills
  • hold a valid UK driving licence (essential due to travel requirements)
Candidates applying for the higher salary grades must demonstrate substantial post-qualification experience in highway design.

Hybrid Working:
Highway Improvements provides a hybrid working structure to support work/life balance. Typically our team members work from home 50% of the week, with the other half being from our base in County Hall Dorchester, other offices or live construction sites throughout Dorset. Remote working equipment including Laptop, Monitor and Office Chair etc are provided. You may be required to attend out of hours meetings, training or site visits occasionally. Pool cars are available at bases across Dorset.
