About the role

EYFS and KS1 Teaching Assistant – Fixed term contract – potentially two positions.

Teaching Assistant (Dorset Grade 5 XS10.4)

Closing date Wednesday 10th December 2025 - midday

Interviews Wednesday 17th December

Term time only. Start January 2026. Fixed Term contract until 31st August 2026 – dependant on previous Dorset Council employment.

Hours: 5x Mornings 8:45 – 12:00 daily and 1x Afternoon per week 13:00 – 15:15 (19.5 hours a week) With the potential for full-time hours (28.5 hours a week) and future employment in September 2026.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, compassionate and highly dedicated teaching assistant who has a passion for enhancing learning experiences for all children.

The successful candidate must have experience of working with EYFS. The successful candidate must be confident in working 1:1, carrying out group interventions, as well as class-based teaching assistant responsibilities.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following:

Essential skills:

· Teaching Assistant Qualification – NVQ Level 2, equivalent or higher.

· Excellent communication and personal organisational skills.

· Confident and resilient when working with children.

· Passionate in supporting children to succeed.

· Determined to make a difference to an individual’s learning journey.

· Ability to work collaboratively with teaching and support staff to raise standards.

· Establish and maintain professional relationships with families and the wider school community.

· Adaptable and flexible approach to supporting children on an individual basis.

· Ability to work collaboratively with SENDCo and outside agencies (such as Speech and Language, Educational Psychologist, Outreach) to deliver personalised programmes and be able to provide feedback.

· Experience of supporting pupils with additional needs, during whole class, group and on a one-to-one basis.

· Approachable and welcoming personality.

· High expectations of children’s learning and behaviour.

· Promotes independent learning by building children’s confidence and enhancing their self-esteem.

· Flexible and able to adapt to working with individuals to small groups.

Desirable skills:

· NVQ 3 or higher.

· First Aid qualification.

· Experience of working within and across EYFS/KS1/KS2.

· Understanding of the Therapeutic Approach to managing challenging behaviour.

· Shows confidence and experience of working with children in the primary age range under the guidance of the classroom teacher.

· Works pro-actively as part of the year group teaching team

· Fosters professional and excellent relationships with children which promote independence and high-quality learning

· Demonstrates good communication skills both spoken and written.

· Awareness of de-escalation techniques and helping children to learn self-regulation.

· Experience of working with children who have an EHCP and/or complex learning difficulties.

· Experience of supporting individuals with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition).

· Experience of supporting children who are non- or pre-verbal.

· Awareness of SEMH (Social, Emotional, Mental and Health) needs and how this may impact child development.

· Awareness of Childhood Adverse Experiences (ACEs).

· Previous experience of delivering interventions or booster groups.

· Willingness to assist with personal care and medical needs.

The pro rata salary shown is based on the number of hours and weeks worked and includes appropriate paid annual leave and bank holiday entitlements.

The salary quoted is the annual salary for the position at the time of advert. The salary will be paid in equal monthly instalments and will be adjusted at the start of employment and again if leaving part way through the school year to ensure the correct salary is received for the work completed in an academic year.

This role is UK based and your Right to Work will need to be established as part of the appointment process.

Keeping Children Safe in Education

St George's Primary School will conduct online searches of shortlisted candidates. This check will be part of a safeguarding check, and the search will purely be based on whether an individual is suitable to work with children. All aspects of social media and internet searches will be conducted. As care must be taken to avoid unconscious bias and any risk of discrimination, a person who will not on the appointment panel will conduct the searches and will only share information if and when findings are relevant and of concern.
