About the role

As an Improvement Practitioner within the Transformation Management Office (TMO), you will play a key role in supporting the development and delivery of projects that contribute to the Council’s wider transformation ambitions and complete the Improvement Practitioner apprenticeship qualification.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain a recognised qualification, build your experience, and contribute to work that delivers meaningful impact.

What’s in it for you
Working in the Transformation Management Office (TMO) means your work directly supports services that make a difference every day. You’ll be part of a team focused on delivering continuous improvement across Dorset Council and gain experience working within a project management environment, providing practical skills in both service and content design.

In return, we offer:

  • the chance to work on high‑profile transformation and improvement projects
  • opportunities to develop your Improvement Practitioner skills aligned to the apprenticeship
  • experience of working across a large, complex organisation with a wide range of professional disciplines
  • a supportive, collaborative team environment aligned to our values of Respect, Together, Accountability, Openness and Curiosity
  • the satisfaction of contributing to projects that improve services for residents, partners and staff

What you can expect to be doing

As an Improvement Practitioner, you will closely with the Service Design, Content Design and wider TMO teams.

This role will include:
  • assisting with analysing services and processes to understand current performance, demand, costs and customer experience.
  • contributing to identifying problems, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement using data, evidence and stakeholder insight.
  • supporting the design of improved (“to be”) ways of working that are efficient, accessible and customer focused.
  • supporting delivery leads, programme managers and project managers with the successful delivery of projects, including with any planning, governance and communications.
  • assisting with testing, implementing and embedding improvements, including pilots, trials and iterative change.
  • supporting the measurement of benefits and outcomes, helping to establish baselines and track improvements over time.
  • completing any assignments and coursework aligned to your apprenticeship course

About you
You’ll be an organised and proactive individual who is committed to completing an apprenticeship. You’ll be confident working with data, being analytical and in communicating with colleagues.

We’re looking for someone who has:
  • some experience of working in a team environment, in a paid, voluntary or learning setting.
  • strong organisational and coordination skills.
  • some experience of researching and analysing information
  • some experience of administrative, customer-facing or support activities.
  • confident ICT skills, including experience of tools such as Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint
  • an interest in service improvement, problem-solving and change

Further Information

The interview will be conducted by a small panel, bringing together a balanced mix of skills, experience and perspectives relevant to the role. This approach ensures a fair, consistent and well‑rounded assessment of each candidate, with panel members focusing on different aspects of the role such as technical competence, behaviours, and alignment with organisational values. Candidates will be asked a structured set of questions, with opportunities to provide examples of their experience and demonstrate how they meet the requirements of the post.

This is a role based at County Hall in Dorchester, with an expectation to attend some in person meetings. There is also the opportunity to work remotely when not required to be in the office.
