About the role

Help shape the future of one of the South West’s most diverse public estates at a pivotal moment for Dorset Council.

Why Dorset?

Dorset is a place of natural beauty, strong communities and ambitious plans for regeneration and service transformation. The Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) 2024–2030 sets out a new, proactive approach to using land and property as a platform for better services, stronger local economies and sustainable growth.

To find out more and take a look at the other roles we have available in Assets & Property please see our careers page.

Why now?

Cabinet has recently approved a bold Disposals & Transfers Programme, unlocking underused assets, supporting regeneration and affordable housing, and generating £46.7m in capital receipts over five years. This new pipeline is now a key mechanism for delivering the SAMP and reinvesting in priority assets.

Disposals and transfers will also reduce maintenance liabilities, empower communities and support better local services.

Why this role?

This role plays a key part in transforming the council from a traditional property owner to a proactive place maker, helping shape how land and buildings support wider corporate priorities.

As an Asset Strategy Surveyor, you will:

  • Lead asset reviews and develop options to rationalise the estate.
  • Drive disposals and transfers from concept to completion.
  • Make professional recommendations that shape service delivery and regeneration.
  • Work with communities, partners and internal teams to maximise value and public benefit.

This is a highly strategic, impactful role where your work will be visible across Dorset’s towns, villages and public services.

About you

You bring experience in asset transfers, disposals and strategic asset management; strong analytical and communication skills; and the motivation to deliver complex projects at pace.

Apply now and play your part in shaping a modern, sustainable Dorset estate.

Further Information

Significant travel across Dorset is required.

Relocation expenses package

A generous relocation package is payable, of which up to £8,000 (of HMRC eligible elements) are free of tax. We can offer you help to move whether you are looking to buy or rent, depending on your circumstances.

Our package includes:

  • an initial advance of up to £2,500 payable when you start
  • help towards fees associated with buying/selling (up to £6,500)
  • an option to receive help towards your rent or mortgage in the first two years

Key skills recruitment and retention payment

This role is included within Dorset Council’s key skills recruitment and retention scheme, which may offer a one-off payment of between £1,500 and £2,000, pro rata for part time hours, subject to an approved business case.

The payment is designed to support recruitment to posts where there is a recognised skills shortage and risk to service delivery if the role remains hard to fill.

The payment is made after successful completion of 24 months’ continuous service in the post and is subject to tax and national insurance, and is non-pensionable.

The scheme applies to this permanent vacancy only and eligibility is assessed in line with the council’s policy, with the full terms confirmed in the offer letter.
