About the role

Help keep Dorset’s operational buildings safe, compliant and running smoothly. Join a team at the heart of delivering high quality public services.

Dorset Council’s Facilities Management service plays a critical role in ensuring our operational buildings (from offices and libraries to depots and community hubs) are safe, well maintained and ready to support frontline services every day. Under the Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) 2024-2030, and through our Effective Property Services (EPS) approach, we are modernising how we manage buildings to ensure consistent standards, professional oversight and excellent service to building users.

As a Facilities Officer, you will be part of a friendly, hands on team delivering essential day-to-day facilities support across the operational estate.

Why this role?

This is a varied, practical role where no two days are the same. You’ll help ensure Dorset Council buildings are safe, secure, well maintained and welcoming for staff, visitors and service users. Working across multiple sites, you’ll support building compliance, safety routines, soft FM tasks and front facing customer support, all of which contribute to delivering a reliable and effective public estate.

What you’ll do

  • Support the smooth running of all operational buildings by delivering a practical, responsive Facilities Management service.
  • Assist with building security, including unlocking/locking duties, site checks and responding to out of hours callouts as part of a rota.
  • Help keep buildings safe by supporting fire alarm tests, evacuation drills, Health & Safety inspections and statutory compliance tasks such as periodic legionella testing.
  • Carry out minor repairs, office moves, furniture moves and general building support tasks (e.g. room setup).
  • Assist with mail handling and secure access systems, including issuing ID badges.
  • Act as a trained first aider for the Council (training provided).

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being active, solving practical problems, and working directly with people across a variety of locations.

Why Dorset?

Dorset Council is implementing a modernised Corporate Landlord approach through the Effective Property Services model - designed to strengthen building compliance, safety, service consistency and customer experience. You’ll be part of a supportive team, working in an environment that values teamwork, reliability and continuous improvement.

You’ll also have access to training, including first aid and building compliance skills, and will be provided with access to works vehicles to carry out your duties.

About you

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Practical, reliable and able to work independently
  • Comfortable working at pace and solving problems on the spot
  • A strong communicator who provides excellent customer service
  • Professional, courteous and a great team player
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and committed to maintaining high standards

Experience in facilities, caretaking, building support or property maintenance would be helpful, but what matters most is your attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to doing a great job.
