We are looking for an experienced Network Engineer to join our Infrastructure team in ICT Operations at Dorset Council.
The Network Engineer plays a vital and influential role at the heart of Dorset Council’s digital infrastructure. As the organisation increasingly relies on modern, cloud‑enabled, and highly connected services, the stability and performance of the council’s network estate underpin everything—from frontline social care and emergency response systems to digital collaboration, public‑facing services, and major transformation programmes.
Working as part of the Infrastructure Team within ICT Operations, the post holder helps to deliver a secure, resilient, and high‑performing network environment across a diverse and geographically distributed estate. This includes supporting critical data centre environments, large office deployments, remote and partner sites, and a growing number of public‑facing and community access locations. The network estate encompasses core switching, routing, SD‑WAN, firewalls, wireless, telephony, load balancing, VPN services, and a comprehensive monitoring and analytics capability—providing a rich technical landscape for professional growth.
This role offers the opportunity to work on high‑impact, technically challenging projects that directly contribute to the council’s digital strategy. The post holder will play a significant part in modernising the network estate, adopting new technologies, improving service reliability, and enhancing security standards. Whether supporting cloud adoption, enabling smart working, delivering Wi‑Fi improvements, or contributing to the evolution of a modern software‑defined network, the Network Engineer helps shape the future of Dorset’s connected infrastructure.
Collaboration is at the core of this role. The post holder will work closely with Infrastructure colleagues, Cyber Security, Technical Architects, Service Delivery teams, external partners, and other ICT specialists to ensure that network services remain robust, secure, and responsive to business needs. This is a role for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, thrives in a technical environment, and wants to make a real difference to public services through innovative digital infrastructure.
If you want to be part of a highly skilled engineering team, enjoy variety in your work, and are passionate about delivering high‑quality network services that support the communities of Dorset, this role offers a rewarding and impactful opportunity.
