About the role

We’re looking for a motivated and organised individual to join our Highways team as a Street Works Co‑ordinator, helping to ensure that all activities on Dorset’s roads are carried out safely, legally, and with minimal disruption to the travelling public.

In this key role, you’ll be responsible for operating the Dorset Council Permit Scheme for Roads & Street Works. You’ll work directly with utility companies, private contractors, and internal teams to support a wide range of activities across the highway network—from daily maintenance to major new schemes and events.

No two days are the same, and you’ll play a vital part in keeping Dorset moving safely and efficiently.

 What you'll be doing:

The main function will be to operate the Dorset Council Permit Scheme for Roads & Street Works.  This team works with Utility companies, private contractors and internal teams to facilitate their works on the highway which includes accessing and maintaining apparatus/assets in and on the highway and new highway schemes across Dorset.

As a Street Works Co‑ordinator, you will:
  • Manage permit applications within a defined geographical area of Dorset
  • Act as the first point of contact for internal and external work promoters
  • Oversee the team’s generic inbox and deal with a range of correspondence
  • Carry out general administrative tasks, including scanning and processing parking board requests
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure permits and applications are considered effectively
  • Communicate with a wide range of stakeholders to support safe and compliant street works
  • Ensure all activities meet relevant legislation, Codes of Practice and highway regulations
  • Prioritise and balance a demanding workload to tight deadlines, using your initiative to solve problems and keep processes running smoothly
Reporting to a Line Manager, the role will be varied and interesting and the post holder will need to be motivated and flexible in their approach to work.  They will need to embrace new digital ways of working and work collaboratively with a range of colleagues.

What's in it for you:

In this role, you'll be central to how Dorset’s highway network is managed. You’ll develop specialist knowledge in street works legislation and highway operations, while gaining hands‑on experience working with a wide range of partners.

You’ll enjoy:

  • A varied, interesting and meaningful role where your work has a real impact across Dorset
  • Professional growth as you build expertise in permit schemes, legislation and highway processes
  • Autonomy and responsibility in managing your area, with the support of an experienced team
  • Daily interaction with stakeholders, helping to build strong working relationships
  • Opportunities to embrace digital tools and new ways of working, supporting efficiency and modernisation
  • A collaborative environment where teamwork and shared problem‑solving are key

If you’re motivated, adaptable, confident using your initiative and ready for a role that blends administration, communication and decision‑making, this could be the perfect next step in your career.

About you:

We’re looking for someone who has:
  • strong organisational skills, able to manage daily demands on the highway network and meet tight deadlines
  • excellent attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in permit processing and administrative tasks
  • the ability to work on your own initiative, making informed decisions and managing your workload independently
  • a positive, ‘can‑do’ attitude, with a willingness to support others and contribute to a collaborative team environment
  • good IT skills, including confident use of Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel
  • willingness to learn new systems, with training provided for service‑specific software
  • strong customer service skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • enjoys working in a busy, fast‑paced environment, with frequent interruptions and changing priorities
  • confidence in handling phone enquiries, including queries from colleagues, internal teams, contractors and the public
  • the ability to balance computer‑based work with varied tasks, ensuring good workflow and screen‑break opportunities

Previous experience in highways, permitting or street works is an advantage but not essential as training will be provided.
